Welcome to the website of the Friends of Bromley Town Parks & Gardens………... Bromley was formerly a sleepy market town in Kent, a stopping point on the route from London to Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, and also a residence of the Bishops of Rochester. “It may be reasonably inferred that in prehistoric times the whole district in and around the modern town of Bromley was covered by woods and undergrowth. Very conspicuous among its flora was the common broom, and from this feature of the landscape the name Bromleag, or in Latin form Bromlega was ultimately derived meaning the heath where the broom grows.” (ELS Horsburgh—History of Bromley, 1928) It is now a major shopping centre in one of the largest boroughs in Greater London. In the centre of Bromley we are lucky to still have a number of marvelous public green spaces which have arisen from the forward thinking and generosity of earlier generations. However these spaces are under are being impacted by nearby developments. This tremendous asset must therefore be maintained to the highest standards, or it will be lost to us all. Working with the council, it is our group’s aim to take up this challenge and protect this heritage and where possible to further enhance them for the 21st century. We intend to use this website to celebrate this legacy and share with you how we intend to enhance it. We would welcome your participation in this and are actively seeking supporters. This website will be updated regularly so please visit it again to see the latest information. For details of what you might see in our parks visit our new Nature Notes page. |

Has been cancelled at the insistence of the Environment Agency. It is hoped that this meeting will be re-arranged with in the next few months. In the meantime to download details of our Friends’ group proposal go to here Bromley Town Centre plans. On 14th April 2010 the public examination of the council’s plans to redevelop Bromley town centre was completed. We now await the Planning Inspector’s decision. These plans will dictate the appearance of the town centre for the next 15 years. Our group is very concerned about the impact on adjacent parks.
