Civic Centre/Bromley Palace campaign.

Having in 2006  ‘re-discovered’ these two rockeries, constructed by James Pulham & Son in 1865, and subsequent clearance of both the Cascade and Fernery we successfully applied for Grade 2 listing from English Heritage to reflect their historic importance. Also listed were the historic Gates in Queen’s Garden.  Subsequently we were successful in getting the Ice House and Ha-Ha Grade 2 listed. Listing means the structures are regarded as of historic interest as part of the national heritage and they are now fully protected.  We are continuing to  work with the L.B.Bromley heritage department and English Heritage on restoring all these garden features and seeking any grant funding required. A recent visit by a potential specialist contractor has brought this closer.

However the  L.B. Bromley Town Centre Area Action Plan still designates this area as Opportunity Site. As such they intend to sell of a large part of this site for development for high status private housing, blocking off public access from Rafford Way to the remaining lake & grounds.  Access to any remaining public owned green space is unsure. Our Friends group remains opposed to the council’s proposals and will fight for public access to the whole site.
